The hotel edit: what to look for before you book

Location, light, and quiet. Three filters that matter more than thread counts or lobby design.

Hotel marketing sells the lobby. Guests live in the room, the street outside, and the ten minutes around the building.

Location first: can you walk to dinner, and can you walk back at night feeling comfortable? A great hotel in the wrong neighborhood is a taxi budget in disguise.

Light second. A room with a real window and morning light changes how a trip feels. Photos hide this; reviews mention it.

Quiet third. Ask for a room away from the elevator and the street, and check whether the windows actually close. Sleep is the amenity that matters.
