A field guide to buying sunglasses once

Good sunglasses are bought once and worn for years. What to look for in frames, lenses, and fit before you spend.

Sunglasses fail in three ways: the frames stretch, the lenses scratch, or the fit never quite worked and they spend their life in a case. A considered purchase avoids all three.

Fit comes first. The frame should sit level, the arms should not pinch, and the lenses should cover the eyes without the frame sliding down the nose. A good optician adjusts all of this in minutes.

Lens quality matters more than tint darkness. Polarization cuts glare; optical clarity is what keeps your eyes from tiring. Cheap lenses distort at the edges, and you feel it by the end of the day.

The case for spending more is simple: a well-made pair, kept in its case and cleaned properly, costs less per wear than three forgettable pairs.

What makes a good everyday watch

One watch, worn daily, should disappear on the wrist and still be noticed. Size, legibility, and versatility, in that order.
